June 2006

Hello!

Warm enough for you? We are fortunate enough to have air conditioning on the shop floor of our factory, to keep the ink and paper at consistent temperature. However there is no such luxury in the office so we are all wilting in the heat!
The recent up turn in sunshine may be an indication of the summer we have to come, but you can be sure that the coming Wimbledon days it will be torrential rain!
Just as the Wimbledon roller-coaster is warming up we are beginning to wind down.
We have completed all of the various guides and books all produced for this two week event.
Maybe it wont grab the headlines quite so much in 2006 as we are all under the cloud of the World Cup.
Do you think England can actually win it?
Patriotic as I am I don’t think its likely, most of our players seem to have horrendous injuries like bruised shins and blistered feet, that’s before they have started playing, I don’t know how they battle on, next thing you know they will be getting x-rays for a stich!
Everyone here at Remous will be cheering England on, as well as hoping Andy Murray can keep the flag flying at Wimbledon (that would be UK not English) wouldn’t it be fantastic if we won them both?
Anywho, moving swiftly on, what have you been up to since we last got in touch?
Other than our normal June rush we have been fortunate to have a lot of stand alone work, some from new customers, but all good commercial print jobs.
That is a little unusual around this time of year, so it’s encouraging that we have been so busy in June.
We still have our Special Offer running so you can still take advantage! Alan Bunter

Remous on the Scrapheap

Keep your eyes open on the new series of Scrapheap Challenge
Keep your eyes open on the new series of Scrapheap Challenge which goes on air in the Autumn, as our very own Graham and Alan Bunter will be making an appearance!
For those of you unfamiliar with the show, two teams are given a mechanical challenge and they have just 10 hours in the scrapheap to build it. This is nearly impossible to achieve, so for each challenge both teams are given an expert to help them with this specific challenge.
This is where Graham and Alan came in!
Both of them having a keen interest in F2 Stock Cars and a wealth of experience in this area, they were approached by the programme’s producers to take part.
Two months down the line they were in at the deep end, having created their designs for the challenge, they arrived at the Scrapheap Location for 3 days filming.
Much was made of the father-son rivalry all for the benefit of the cameras, we will keep the result a surprise for when the programme is shown on Channel 4, some when in late October.
The challenge was entitled ‘Skid Pan Sumo’ which involved building a machines that could carry the teams which then tried to push each other out of a Sumo style circle.
Just a bit of a change from the usual print related news!
What lurking in our pressroom?
Alan Bunter   Some facts about our presses. Presses
To some of you it may not be of interest, to others it may be fascinating. Here is a little information on our two presses. We have two Litho Presses here at Remous, both of which are B2 (ie can handle paper up to 520mm x 720mm) They are very similar machines excepting one has five printing units and one has two.
  • Our 5 colour press can run at a maximum speed of 13,000 sheets per hour. When new this press cost around £700,000 a hefty bill on the best of days!
  • Both our machines are very much at the sharp end of Litho Press technology.
  • Both presses can print the image to within hundredths of a millimetre on an A2 sheet, even running at over 10,000 sheets per hour.
  • We use on approximately 120 kilos of ink every month.
  • The two colour press has a perfecting unit, this means it can print both sides of the paper in one colour in one pass. We purchased this machine new, specifically for single and two colour work.
  • Both presses have automatic wash systems, the blankets and rollers clean themselves regularly through the day.
  • The five colour press is over 30ft long 10ft wide and 7ft high, when it arrived here on two lorries, the main structure was in 3 pieces.
  • Both machines use so much water, they are plumbed into the mains water supply.
  • Two presses use 300 litres of alcohol in 4 weeks as well around 100 litres of cleaning chemistry.
Just some of the more interesting facts and figures about our press room, I was hoping to demonstrate how big and thirsty Litho Presses are, as well as the sheer size of them. People often forget that Litho Print is still an involved mechanical process using inks and chemicals, the common misconception is we receive the artwork for a job, put it into a computer and hit the button that says ‘PRINT’!!
